Six of the best from Leeds

9 August 2009

Match report

Leicester v Leeds (friendly)Leeds’s fine pre-season form continued with a 6-1 win away to Leicester City Ladies.

All the goals came in the first half. In-form forward Ellen White opened the scoring in the 9th minute, doubling the lead in the 13th. Rachel Daly then popped up to put away a Smith free kick three minutes later, before Leicester’s solitary reply came in the 20th minute from Courtney Sweetman-Kirk.

A Jess Wright header from a Sue Smith corner made it 4-1 after 28 minutes, with a Carla Cantrell brace wrapping up the Leeds scoring in stoppage time, the second a beatifully taken free kick.

Leeds relaxed in the second half and although they again made many chances, they didn’t add to the scoreline.

“This was a worthwhile workout for the players,” said Leeds manager Rick Passmoor. “The work we did on the residential at Giggleswick earlier in the week was on show on the pitch today.

“We learned a lot about ourselves toady, and I hope we can carry that form on into Tuesday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.”

Kick-off for Tuesday’s friendly is 7.30pm, with the game being played at Sherburn White Rose.

The reserves were also in action against Leicester, with Gemma Grainger’s new-look side running out 5-2 winners, thanks to goals from Letitia Connier (2) Carey Huegett (2) and Grace John.
