Leeds Carnegie Ladies 1-2 Sunderland Women
FA Tesco Women’s Premier League. Throstle Nest, Farsley.
Leeds Carnegie Ladies crashed to their first defeat of the season to a determined Sunderland Women’s side.
In front of their largest crowd of the season so far, swelled by Sunderland’s travelling support, Leeds seemed set to continue the run of form that had seen them unbeaten in their opening games, while not conceding a goal.
But it was the visitors who settled into their rhythm faster, while denying the hosts any chance to get going themselves.
While Leeds did have their chances, their goal came from a mix-up between keeper Rachel Laws and Gemma Wilson, whose header back missed Laws and crossed the line.
Sunderland were level ten minutes later, however, when Leeds failed to deal with a corner, giving Steph Bannon a chance to head home from six yards out.
Leeds started the second half much the better team, but again found themselves frustrated, more so when a Sophie Williams shot from 20 yards dipped over Carly Telford’s outstretched hand.
Next up for Leeds is a tricky away tie in the Premier League Cup against Aston Villa Ladies on Sunday 4 October.
