We're in the Final! PDF Print E-mail

If you haven’t already heard we reached the FA Cup Final on Sunday. We played Everton in the semi final who are recently crowned League Cup Winners. We knew it was going to be a hard game and that we had to be at the top of our game to get the result we wanted. And difficult it was, it lasted all the way to extra time and penalties. This is the third game in our FA Cup run that went to penalties.

Sue SmithDuring the game Everton had a penalty saved from our in form keeper Carly Telford, our two centre halves were immense and even cleared one off the line. However we did create some of our own chances and it was quite end-to-end which would have been quite entertaining for the neutral but my Mum and Dad could hardly look. Especially when I stepped up to take the winning penalty it was just too much for my mum who shut her eyes. My Dad, I thought had more confidence he watched it all and knew exactly were I was going to put the penalty. So when I said that’s nice Dad having confidence in your daughter he replied ‘oh no I didn’t you had a bad knee and left footers are prone to missing them’ (Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle) cheers Dad! Its funny because we did ride our luck a little and it does seem that there was some divine intervention somewhere along the line – lets just say that I think that Lucy Ward’s Dad, Steve, was looking down on us and helped us get to the Final I know he would be so proud.

So thankfully I did manage to score and there sparked the celebrations. Its great for the club and with the Final only down the road at Nottingham Forest it gives a chance to all Leeds United fans to come down and support us. It is on the 5th May (Bank Holiday Monday) against Arsenal ladies but I am sure I will mention this a few more times before the big event.

I know the majority of Leeds fans are fully supportive of the Ladies team but there are some exceptions that love to slate the Women’s game. All I would add is if you haven’t got anything positive to say then just keep quiet – the women’s game has a tough enough time being respected as it is without fans of a team that has actually got to an FA Cup Final being negative for the sake of it. This is a Leeds team and yes, we did get well and truly beaten last time we were there by Arsenal, but I bet there is not one person that slates us that has actually played in an FA Cup Final. I know this for a fact because if they had they would know what it takes to get there and the huge achievement that it is for the entire club. There, rant over, support the girls MOT!

On to the Masquerade ball, it was a great night and we managed to raise a lot of money for the club. A massive thank you to Leeds Carnegie who supplied the students to undertake this event. They were excellent and made it a very special night. I did actually wear a dress as did the rest of the girls and thankfully no one commented on my thunder thighs!! We had some excellent things to auction and for me the pick of the bunch was a signed Maradona and Pele shirt. I decided resolutely that I was going to bid on these, however after looking that the minimum bid was £400 I thought again. My only disappointment was not winning the best mask, I had a pirate one and it was ace even if I do say so myself.

I am now away with England, we have a game against the Czech Republic tonight so there was no celebrating after the Semi-Final for me just straight into international duty. This is going to be our toughest game to date as they are unbeaten in the group. So again we will have to be at the top of our game to get the result that we want. The game is at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster so it’s a local one for me for a change so please come and show your support for England Ladies and bring your Leeds flags. I will let you know the result next week.
