FA Womens National Premier league    Thursday 13th December 2007

Blackburn Rovers 2 Leeds United Ladies 1

Leeds lost their unbeaten record on a night when poor finishing cost them the points.

Leeds seemed to take time to adjust to the freezing conditions, it was Blackburn who looked the brighter and more determined team in the opening quarter.

Blackburn went ahead in the 16 minute when ex Leeds player Karen Burke was first to a loose ball on the edge of the area and struck a fine shot into the corner of the net, which gave the Leeds keeper no chance of saving.

Leeds had a chance to level moments later, Amanda Barr used her pace to beat the offside trap and burst into the box as the keeper came to meet her she hesitated and lost her footing putting the ball wide.

The icy hard pitch made it difficult for both sides to play any good football, one of the few good footballing moves came from a pin point diagonal pass from Sophie Walton to Sue Smith, who dribbled past the full back, cut inside and saw her shot go narrowly wide.

Leeds had further chances from inside the six yard box from Barr and Holtham, but didn't make them count.Blackburn looked dangerous on the attack with Kate Anderton using her strength and pace to good effect, it was Anderton who scored Blackburn's second of the day with a fine effort from the right.

Leeds looked an improved side in the second half but again couldn't put the chances away, the Blackburn keeper came out to block shots from Mel Sutcliffe, Amanda Barr and Sue Smith.

Jade Moore came on for Ollie Thackray mid way in the second half with Steph Houghton also getting more minutes of football as she recovers from her broken leg for the final 20 minutes.

Leeds were rewarded with a penalty when ex Leeds captain Natalie Preston stopped a goal bound shot with going in with her hand from six yards, amazingly the referee only brandished a yellow card.Sue Smith coolly put away the results penalty low to the keepers left.

Leeds frustrations in front of goal continued in the closing stages at the other end Leeds keeper Carly Telford had to be at her best to tip a thunderous shot from Kate Anderton over the bar in injury time.
