Leeds United, with three players in England’s World Cup squad, are one of the teams whose pre-season is going to stretch well into September. Wednesday keeper Claire Wallhead, a former Leeds player, was a key factor in the interval arriving without a goal, as she ensured the score remained goalless time and time again, while at times Leeds were somewhat profligate with their chances. Lucy Ward opened five minutes after the interval with a perfectly timed lob of the keeper after an inch perfect cross from Sue Smith and by the time the hour mark arrived Leeds were well on their way to victory with a second for Ward who tapped in the rebound after a fine reflex save from Wallhead and a crisp finish from Katie Holtham. Ward completed her hat trick with Leeds’ fourth, while Steph Houghton, one of the club’s England contingent, made it 5-0 with a cracking goal from the right angle of the box (the same in China would be ideal!). Tanya Rich headed the final sixth goal from a deep cross from the right moments before the final whistle. Leeds play Leicester City FC Women in a first team/reserve double header at Tadcaster Albion on Sunday (both games kick off 1.00pm). |
