Lionesses tamed as Leeds open with a win

Millwall Lionesses 1-2 Leeds United Ladies
FA Tesco Women’s Premier League National Division
Sunday 22 August 2010 at Beckenham Town FC

Match reportTwo first half goals from Carey Huegett were enough to give Leeds United Ladies all three points in their opening fixture against Millwall Lionesses.

An already threadbare Leeds side had to draft in Lincoln Ladies stopper Kay Hawke after Jules Draycott was ruled unfit to play after her return from an England training camp. But that didn’t faze the side at all, and they duly made the breakthough in the 21st minute, when Chloe Foster’s shot from Leah Galton’s cross was parried away, and Huegett was quickest to react from six yards out.

Huegett’s second on the stroke of half time was another close-range effort, as Millwall’s keeper again failed to clear.

But Millwall came back much the stronger for the second half, and will be disappointed that their effort only resulted in their sole, 84th-minute goal from Emma Beckett.

“Despite starting so late with pre-season, the performances were there for all to see,” said Leeds manager Gemma Grainger. “It’s obviously good to get our first points and goals in our opening game, and a win against tough opposition gives us confidence going forward into the rest of the season.”
